BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF KHENPO NGAWANG GYATSO

Khenpo Ngawang Gyatso was born in Tibet. He completed his high school studies there and joined the Sakya Lakhang Chenmo as a monk. Gradually, he completed rigorous monastic training in the Sakya Lakhang Chenmo. He went for further studies at the Institute of Higher Buddhist Studies in Lhasa where he studied the five major texts of Buddhist Philosophy of the Perfection of Wisdom, Middle Way, Valid Cognitions, Treasure of Knowledge and Monastic Discipline. Later he returned to Lakhang Chenmo and studied Mahayana Sutra, Tantra, Literature, History and so on. Therefore, right from a tender age, he had received most of the knowledge of Buddhist Philosophy and Monastic Training. He served in Lakhang Chenmo as a Secretary and teacher for several years.

In the year 1993, he came to India. After meeting His Holiness the Sakya Trizin, he was advised to enter Sakya College at Dehra Dun. There he studied the Eighteen Major Text of Buddhist Philosophy and Jhon Thag Sum. Within a short period of time, he completed the Acharya Degree. After that he taught Buddhist Philosophy in Sakya College for one year.

He was appointed as Khenpo or Chief Abbot of Sakya Choepheling, Institute of Higher Buddhist studies in Rimbick, Darjeeling by His Holiness the Sakya Trizin. Presently he is taking full responsibility of Sakya Choepheling, Institute of Higher Buddhist Studies.
